Kipahulu Farm Tour 24 October
Tour Was a Huge Success! Mahalo!
We will meet to register at Wailuku Baseball Stadium parking lot at 6:30 am and King Kekaulike Parking lot on the Kula Highway side, at 7am.
Travel to beautiful Kipahulu by way of Ulupalakua and the majestic south side, and join us for a walking tour of four premier organic farms. Along with the magic of this ecological wonder of Maui, attendees will enjoy a gourmet lunch of organic Ulu (breadfruit), Kalo (Taro)
sweet potato salad, a choice of fish, Maui Grass Fed Beef or a vegetarian dish, mixed local salad and home brewed Ginger Kombucha, topped off with fresh fruit pops and fruit salad. This is a rare and extraordinary opportunity to experience this special district of Kipahulu !
About the Farms:
These farms represent what is possible when the practice of growing our food is built around cover crops, ground covers, compost, and amendments to balance out the soil structure. This truly abundant food growing area will inspire attendees to move forward in their own evolution of growing, preparing and understanding their relationship to food and its origins.
We will be viewing exotic fruits found no other place on Maui, along with vibrant vegetables, all grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers. A walk through various types of towering bamboo will evoke a myriad of uses in one's imagination. We also will walk among the spirits of the elders in a taro loi that spans back to ancient times. Ethnobotanical
sharing about plants that you will see along the route will include
native (endemic) Hawaiian plants that have special cultural importance to the native Hawaiian culture.
This very full day also includes a visit to a private, non-commercial farm that demonstrates the ingredients necessary for a sustainable, edible food farm.
Pickup and
Drop off Points:
We will meet to register at Wailuku Baseball Stadium parking lot at 6:30 am and King Kekaulike Parking lot on the Kula Highway side, at 7am.
The only way to participate in this tour is to take the mini buses chartered. Due to the limited parking areas there will be no private vehicles allowed. This is truly a time to give to yourself to enjoy the majestic views en-route to Kipahulu and leave the driving to these trained professionals who tour the island regularly.
Our ride home together will be a great way to top off the day, taking in the sunset
of this majestic drive along the meditative coast of south Maui while feeling the abundance of the day.

What to bring:
Due to Kipahulu's unique tropical weather patterns and some hilly terrain, attendees are encouraged to bring good footwear, raincoat and hat. Sunshine is also abundant on a regular basis so come prepared for that too, ie bring your own water bottle.
As a bonus to this tour we will have Bob Shaffer, a soil consultant and compost expert, on hand to give his input and recommendations to each farm regarding their soil analysis results. When a similar tour was done in 2002 a soil test was taken, so this will be a look at how these soils have evolved since then.
Registration:
We are now filling up our last bus......... Register now so not to miss out on this very rare access to these beautiful farms. Considering the convience in comfort of travel around the beautiful South side of Maui, and what a relaxing trip to this magical place represents coupled with a delicious gourmet organic lunch while there, plus visiting these great farms and learning more about growing Organically this event will be one not to miss and is a great value!
