Bio - Paul Reed Hepperly

Paul is a plant doctor with advanced degrees in the disciplines of plant pathology, plant disease, their epidemiology and management, and crop science, agronomy the science of plant production. He has managed and conducted research on advanced composting methodology, the effects of compost and compost teas on plant responses and disease, the role of organic matter in farming productivity success and the environment, carbon sequestration of agricultural practices and systems, biologically based no till farming, energy analysis of agricultural systems, nutrient recycling and management, the roles and importance beneficial micro-organisms that are found in soil especially mycorrhizal fungi and the Rhizobium Nitrogen fixing bacteria.
He has extensive experience on grain, vegetables, forage and fruit production methods and problem solving. Hepperly is a pioneer in the field of holistic farming which encompasses the integration of energy, ecology and economics in developing systems that promote sustainable and successful farming practices that optimize food quality and health. In 2001 he developed an effective program and campaign to combat devastating ginger bacterial wilt with US Department of Agriculture in Hawaii and in 2002 he developed effective management for ginger root rot for Winrock International in India.
In 2005 Hepperly was awarded the Rachel Carson Sense of Science Award for his pioneer work on the carbon sequestration and energy efficiency associated with organic agricultural practices. In 2006, he worked OICI and National Ghana National Agricultural Ministry to develop pit composting methods and advance them into village practice. In 2007, he was awarded the African Humanitarian Award. In 2007 Paul worked as a Fulbright Scholar for National Agricultural Research program in Uruguay where he designed long term trials on organic vegetable production.
